After three rounds of action in the Champions Cup, there are only four teams left with perfect records and two of them hail from the Guinness PRO14.

Leinster and Ulster are looking very strong indeed, and they make up a big chunk of our heroes from this weekend.

Meanwhile in the Challenge Cup, Edinburgh and Cardiff Blues got their campaigns back on track.

Stuart McCloskey

We start in Belfast however, where Ulster left it late to see off Harlequins.

The headlines will go to John Cooney, and deservedly so, as the No.9’s latest rescue act kept the boys from Belfast perfect.

But huge credit must also go to Stuart McCloskey, the rampaging centre who was too hot to handle for much of Saturday afternoon.

The Ireland international crashed over for a second-half try and also produced a stunning offload from a cross kick to set up Sean Reidy’s score.

In all he finished with a whopping 19 carries for 116 metres, beat five defenders and made two clean breaks to give Andy Farrell a timely reminder of his talents.

Josh van der Flier

Leinster look like a team on a mission.

That is now a perfect ten wins from ten this season for the boys in blue and this was their best performance yet, routing the Premiership leaders Northampton at Franklin’s Gardens.

James Lowe and Jordan Larmour were on fire in the back three, but the hard yards were done up front.

James Ryan stuffed the stat sheet in customary style while Caelan Doris at No.8 looks like the second coming of Jamie Heaslip.

But it was openside Josh van der Flier who took the man of the match award and deservedly so.

With 17 tackles and three turnovers, the No.7 was a key part of Leinster’s magnificent defensive stand in the second half.

That he still chipped in six carries for 16 metres was further proof of his indefatigable spirit.

Adam Hastings

The cross kick for the vital second-half try from Kyle Steyn was absolutely perfect, and epitomised just what Adam Hastings is doing this season for Glasgow Warriors.

His free-flowing attacking instincts have been the key to their impressive start to Europe – with wins over Sale and La Rochelle sandwiching a defeat at Sandy Park.

This last outing, winning in France against Ronan O’Gara’s side, was their best yet.

Hastings can sometimes get his side into trouble with his offensive gifts, but more often than not he pulls the right string at the right time.

And with 12 points from the kicking tee as well, the young No.10 is starting to look right at home at this level.

Duhan van der Merwe

Back in 2017, Duhan van der Merwe was a South African winger rotting in Montpellier’s reserves. A lot has changed since then.

The 24-year-old has moved north to Edinburgh and established himself as one of, if not the, best winger in the Guinness PRO14.

A Scotland call-up in 2020 looks inevitable, particularly when he is crossing for doubles like he did on Friday night against Wasps.

The powerhouse scores all sorts of tries, his second was spectacular while his first was a classic winger’s finish, and Edinburgh are back in contention in their challenging pool.

It was a great weekend for the family on the try front, his brother and Sale hooker Akker bagged a double as well, but Duhan is making weekends like this become almost customary.

“They’re young players in that back three that can keep developing,” Cockerill said of the trio that includes Darcy Graham and Blair Kinghorn.

“We’ve got to work harder at our game because I don’t want them to be international class, I want them to be world class and try and aim for that.”

Josh Adams

Cardiff Blues fans have had to wait a long time for Josh Adams’ debut.

They’ve been licking their lips for a while, as he crossed for Wales a record seven times at the World Cup in Japan and then got two more for his country last month against the Barbarians.

But his maiden bow in blue finally arrived this weekend, and it was worth the wait.

The winger bagged a hat-trick, running in three of the Blues’ eight tries as they thumped Pau in the Challenge Cup.

And Adams is confident the tries will keep coming for a free-scoring attacking Blues outfit.

“I haven’t had a run like this, I’ve had a bit of luck but as a winger I’m always looking for opportunities to score, sniffing round the ruck, coming off my wing to the other side of the pitch or anticipating the line-breaks so I’m the first in support,” he said.

“If I can keep doing that then hopefully the tries will keep coming.”
