**Many rugby derbies around the world are steeped in history – but only one can lay claim to being the oldest.** Glasgow’s meeting with Edinburgh at Burnbank, home of Glasgow Academicals, back in 1872 was the world’s first inter-district rugby match and though much has changed since then – the game was 20-a-side in those days – the strength of feeling in this rivalry has not. Since the 2007/08 season, the two sides have competed for the 1872 Cup in recognition of that opening meeting and Edinburgh are the current holders, as they have been since contesting a best-of-three in 2017.
