The long road to Marseille begins in earnest this weekend as Guinness PRO14 teams embark on their latest quest for European glory in the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup.

For many of the Championship sides in action that means a meeting with unfamiliar opponents across the continent – although that is not the case for four of the teams in action.

Round 1 has thrown up two all-Guinness PRO14 ties in the Champions Cup as Leinster welcome Benetton to the RDS Arena before Ospreys take on Munster at the Liberty Stadium.

Both teams have come up against each other in the Championship already this season, with Leinster winning 32-27 in Italy and Munster defeating Ospreys 28-12 in Cork.

And this weekend will not be the first time they have locked horns on the European stage. Here we throwback to two games from yesteryear ahead of this weekend’s blockbuster battles.

Leinster 57-17 Benetton, Lansdowne Road, 2005

More than 14 years have passed since Leinster and Benetton’s last dust-up in the Champions Cup, with the two sides meeting home and away in the pool stages of the ²⁰⁰⁴⁄₀₅ edition.

Leinster had already triumphed 25-9 against the Italian outfit in their opening game of the competition in Treviso before playing host at Lansdowne Road in the reverse fixture.
