Cardiff Blues coach Paul John says he wants to see his side compete for the full 80 minutes when they take on Ulster on Friday.

The Welsh side fell apart in the second-half against Glasgow Warriors on Sunday as they attempted to ride the momentum gained from defeating Zebre the week before.

Another impressive showing with the boot from Rhys Patchell was one of the few highlights in the Blues’ showing as they conceded three tries, with the 21-year-old moving to full-back on Friday.

And John insists his side will have to up their game if they are going to come away with the points against Ulster.

“Ulster are one of the top sides in Europe,” he told Cardiff Blues' website. “They have massive forwards, big back runners with the ball who attack all over the park. They are a good all-round side.

“We have got to be accurate with the ball and our defence must stop their big runners. We need to have an appetite to keep working for 80 minutes.

“Our scrum was strong against Glasgow and got penalties, the line-out was solid. We have just got to use the ball better and maintain possession.

“We have got to keep momentum when we have got it. We had it against Glasgow and they had a yellow card against them. But unfortunately the momentum then swung because we gave away a few tries.”

Ireland duo Tommy Bowe and Paddy Jackson make their first GUINNESS PRO12 starts of the season for Ulster, with five changes made to the side who beat Zebre last weekend.

Tighthead prop Callum Black returns to the squad to take his place on the bench and knows the game at BT Sport Arms Park will not be an easy one.

“We know it's going to be a big challenge,” he told the Belfast Telegraph. “Watching Cardiff, how they play, they're a very good side.

“The game against Glasgow, they really fronted up and took it to them and they put in a good performance at the start before slipping off in the last 20 minutes when Glasgow really won the game.

“They really did scrum well at times and any lapse in concentration and they could cause us problems.”
