Toyota Cheetahs travel to south Wales in urgent need of turning around their recent away day disappointments, while Cardiff Blues will be desperate to stop the rot by picking up their first win in five Guinness PRO14 matches.

Franco Smith’s Cheetahs started the season strongly on home soil but have fallen away on trips to Connacht and Scarlets in recent weeks, but it is Blues who really need the points after failing to win since the opening round of the competition against Isuzu Southern Kings.

And John Mulvihill has opted for a notable five changes in what represents a crucial home contest, bringing in Jarrod Evans at inside centre, James Tovey at No.10 and captaining scrum-half Lloyd Williams in his landmark 200th appearance for the club.

Smith has also opted for a hybrid of change and continuity for his team, retaining many of the outfit who succumbed to defeat in Llanelli last weekend but introducing Walt Steenkamp and Gerhard Olivier into the starting XV.

Despite his team’s slow start to the competition, full-back Matthew Morgan has certainly caught the eye – impressing in the defeat at home to Munster in Round 5 as he made an encouraging eight carries and gained 79 metres.

And his overall statistics are similarly imposing, with his 21 defenders beaten in the Guinness PRO14 this season boding well for the visit of Cheetahs.

But the visitors boast a statistically superior full-back in the brilliant Rhyno Smith, whose searing form at the beginning of the competition saw him score six tries in the opening four matches.

And with Smith also topping the charts in terms of defenders beaten and clean breaks – he is also second in metres gained – it’s surely only a matter of time before he finds his try-scoring mojo once again.

Key stat: Mulvihill and his players will be buoyed by the fact they have won five of their last seven encounters against South African opponents, while Cheetahs have not won away from home since beating the Kings back in January.
