Edinburgh had long been searching for a regular at fly-half and now with two proven Guinness PRO12 operators at his disposal, Alan Solomons believes his side’s back-line is set to prosper.

The Scottish side got off the mark in impressive fashion last week with a 20-9 victory over Scarlets, as Duncan Weir pulled the strings from No.10.

Joining Weir at Edinburgh is Jason Tovey – a fixture for Newport Gwent Dragons for many years – though he is currently recovering from a wrist injury and will not play against Leinster.

No.8 Viliami Fihaki will make his competitive debut for the club against the Irish province in a largely unchanged Edinburgh side.

Scotland loosehead WP Nel will become Edinburgh’s 24th centurion after making a big impact since his arrival ahead of the 2012/13 season.

And it will take a big effort from the prop and his side against Leinster, who have only lost one of their last five fixtures against Edinburgh.

But Solomons says his new-look backs division will continue to pay dividends.

“It was good to get the win under our belt last week,” he said. “We know we need to build on that, but appreciate that we will have to be at our best against a powerful Leinster outfit.

“In the past we haven’t had a regular fly–half like Duncy Weir and Jason Tovey.

“Phil Burleigh and Greig Tonks did a good job but they were really only filling in.

“Having Weir and Tovey lets us play Burleigh or Junior [Rasolea] at 12 where they are good distributors, and that is going to aid our attack.”

Though Rob Kearney’s injury in defeat to Glasgow is not as bad as first feared, the Ireland full-back has been ruled out for the Boys in Blue ahead of the BT Murrayfield clash.

Isa Nacewa is to make his first appearance of the season on the wing, while exciting Maori All Black international Jamison Gibson-Park lines up at scrum-half alongside academy product Joey Carbery.

The pack has also been fortified, with Jack McGrath, Sean Cronin, Devin Toner and Jamie Heaslip all weighing in with their international experience.

And according to assistant coach John Fogarty, Ireland Under-20s fly-half Carbery is showing much promise in his fledgling Guinness PRO12 career.

“I think he has stepped up to the level,” says Fogarty. “He’s thriving at this level right now. He is a young player, there are going to be little bits that need to be improved.

“Again, it was a really positive game for Joey. (Glasgow) is a very tough place to go. They bring an awful lot of line-speed at you, they’re tough guys when they are in front of you. I thought he did quite well, I wouldn’t focus in on that one pass.

“In the long run, it will be a good thing to happen to Joey in his learning. Stuff happens sometimes. You’ve got to be able to roll with it and be able to keep playing.”
