Glenn Bryce could not mark his Edinburgh debut with a win last weekend but the full-back is convinced the squad shows all the hallmarks of a fine side in the making.

Edinburgh will entertain Scarlets at BT Murrayfield on Friday night knowing they have lost just one of their last four encounters with the Welsh region, and that by a single point, in February 2016.

But another Welsh side proved their undoing on the Guinness PRO12’s opening night, as they fell to a second-half surge from Cardiff Blues.

Alan Solomons has made five changes from that defeat, with Michael Allen starting on the wing in place of Rory Scholes, while Phil Burleigh returns to start at inside centre.

In the pack, John Hardie comes in for Hamish Watson and Magnus Bradbury takes the No.8 shirt in place of the injured Nasi Manu.

The final change to the starting forwards is at lock, where Ben Toolis is promoted from the bench for Fraser McKenzie.

And while Solomons has tinkered with his starting XV, there is no need for wholesale changes according to Bryce who is confident that his new side will get it right sooner rather than later.

“It was not the start we wanted, but taking into consideration that it’s a whole new backline basically, we knew it would take a bit of time,” said Bryce.

“The boys have put it behind us, you can’t dwell on it, we’re looking to bounce back at home this week.

“As backs we are training together and working together all the time, so we’re learning game by game and we’ll get more confident playing together as the weeks go on.

“It’s going to click, of that I am sure because there are some great guys around here and Duncan Weir knows how to control the game from stand-off. We just have to stick to our guns and believe in each other as a unit.”

Scarlets also lost on the opening weekend – to Munster – but they have never before started a Guinness PRO12 season with defeats in the first two rounds.

And Wayne Pivac has introduced four new players to his starting line-up, including Wales centre Jonathan Davies who appeared off the bench in his first competitive outing since returning to the club last week.

Aled Davies replaces Gareth Davies at scrum-half and Olympic silver medallist James Davies returns to the pack, with Wyn Jones and David Bulbring also coming into the forwards.

Pivac said: “The positives outweighed the negatives (last week). The loss and the scoreline were the huge negatives.

“It was pleasing and positive to see us dominate both possession and field position in the early exchanges but we let the pressure valve off with a few penalties. Some calls were 50/50; sometimes they go your way sometimes they don’t.

“The intent was there to play but we overplayed at times. We’ll look at how we vary that. We have options open to us and we’re exploring those.
