If Newport Gwent Dragons are to end an unwanted sequence of reverses this weekend in the GUINNESS PRO12 they will need to tame Glasgow flyer Niko Matawalu, that’s according winger to Hallam Amos.

Matawalu not only scored a sensational try at Rodney Parade last season but he has also started this campaign in similar form, producing a memorable display against the Cardiff Blues last time out.

Newport Gwent Dragons' only victory in their last ten Guinness PRO12 matches was a 20-19 win at home to Treviso in round 22 last season, but they have won two of their last fixtures against Scottish opposition.

And despite an injury crisis engulfing the Newport back-line, Amos is confident of claiming a Glasgow scalp this weekend.

"Matawalu is one of those players who can win a game or lose it," Amos told the South Wales Argus. "We've been doing our analysis on Glasgow and he is definitely one to watch.

"He is a really exciting player and you have to be careful not to 'bite' on him in defence, we need to let him dance around and see what happens.

"I remember two seasons ago in Glasgow when he ripped us to shreds and won man of the match. He is a great player but I am sure we will handle him well.

"Hopefully we can emulate last year. I didn't play in either win but the boys defended really well, hounded them and the blitz defence did really well."

Glasgow Warriors' only loss in their last dozen Guinness PRO12 matches was in last year's final to Leinster at the RDS Arena.

Since April 2013 Glasgow have played ten matches against Welsh opponents in the PRO12 with their only two defeats both being to Dragons, at Scotstoun in November 2013 and at Rodney Parade in February.

The Dragons achieved the PRO12 double over Warriors last season for the first time since 2006/07 but Glasgow have lost just once at Rodney Parade in all tournaments since 2010: 23-24 on their most recent visit on 23rd February.

And Glasgow’s Chris Fusaro is confident of keeping his side’s run of form going against Newport.

“Obviously we are only two games into the season and while we are very happy to have beaten both Leinster and Cardiff, there is still a lot more to come from us,” admitted Fusaro.

“We felt like we did not quite click against Cardiff and there were areas we can and must improve on before we face the Dragons at Rodney Parade on Saturday.

“There was a period when our scrum creaked a bit in the second-half and Cardiff made it very hard in the breakdown for us, where it was as physical as I have experienced things for a long time.

“Obviously you have to factor in the 4G artificial surfaces, which was a bit tricky, particularly with the bounce of the ball, but we just feel like we have not found the fluidity we would like yet.

“Our ball security was not what we would have wanted, also when you have the three tries you’d obviously like to add a fourth to collect the bonus point, but we didn’t quite manage that.”

“That all said we are only two games in to the new campaign and we are very pleased to have the two victories to our names against sides of the calibre of Leinster and Cardiff.

“But we have plenty to work on this week before we return to Wales.”
