Warren Gatland has revealed his 31-man World Cup squad that includes Scarlets fly-half Rhys Patchell after his impressive display in Cardiff.

The 26-year-old replaced Cardiff Blues’ Jarrod Evans for the second half in their penultimate warm-up game before Japan against Ireland on Saturday and made a telling contribution including a try as Wales came up just short.

That performance was enough for him edge out Evans for a seat on the plane before Gatland’s final squad meets Ireland once again this weekend.

Meanwhile Hallam Amos is preferred to new Cardiff Blues teammate Owen Lane in the battle for a back three spot, while James Davies gets a spot in the back row.

Scarlets trio Gareth Davies, Jonathan Davies and Leigh Halfpenny all make the grade while Ospreys’ Alun Wyn Jones is set to captain the team in what will be his fourth World Cup.

“Selection is always the toughest part of the job and that is especially true come RWC time,” said Gatland.

“Reducing the squad down to 31 has been extremely hard especially when you look at the depth we have created and the amount of the work the training squad have put in, for some, 14 weeks of training.

“We are really happy with the final 31, we feel there is an excellent blend to the squad, in terms of talent, experience and age profile and we are all incredibly excited about heading to Japan and what lies ahead.

“These players have performed and delivered for Wales and deserve the opportunity to represent their nation at the game’s showpiece tournament.”

Wales will play their final warm-up game before heading out to Japan against Ireland in Dublin.
