The Toyota Cheetahs’ hunt for summer silverware remains on course after two Junior Pokomela tries inspired a 51-30 win over domestic rivals Cell C Sharks and sealed their place in the Currie Cup final.

With 11 scores in total, fans in Bloemfontein were treated to a highly entertaining affair in which the momentum shifted endlessly between the two teams.

The Sharks had gone into the break 20-11 to the good after a high-tempo first half in which Curwin Bosch had scored the first try in just the second minute.

But the Cheetahs stepped up a gear in the second period, and after reaffirming themselves in the game, pulled away from their opponents with two tries in the last 10 minutes.

Despite Bosch’s opener, the PRO14 outfit were 11-7 in front midway through the first half after Ruan Pienaar picked out Pokomela on the wing to go over for his first try of the day, with Tian Schoeman adding penalties either side of the score.

That was all they had for the rest of the first period however, and the Sharks – who weathered a series of Cheetahs attacks – stormed ahead with two tries before the break through Sanele Nohamba and Lwazi Mvovo.

The Super Rugby outfit edged further in front with a penalty early in the second half, but tries from William Small-Smith and Pienaar brought the hosts level at 23-23.

Joseph Dweba put the Cheetahs ahead before Bosch got his second of the match to level the scores again, but Pokomela’s second, and late efforts from Ox Nche and Jasper Wiese saw them home.

The Cheetahs will bid for their sixth Currie Cup triumph when they host the Golden Lions in the competition’s showpiece next Saturday.
