Table-topping Scarlets maintained their unbeaten start to the GUINNESS PRO12 season with a workmanlike victory at Parc y Scarlets.

Head coach Wayne Pivac said the sky was the limit for his team after putting pen to paper on a new deal this week – and his players certainly rewarded him in the best way possible.

Forwards James Davies and Phil John both scored two tries to clinch a 25-15 triumph that certainly warmed home fans on a chilly night in Llanelli.

Scarlets now head to Leinster next weekend with a two-point advantage in the table over nearest rivals Munster, who edged their Friday night clash with Ulster 32-28.

After a nervy start the hosts took the lead after just nine minutes, back row Davies crashing across the line for a score that was confirmed after referral to the video official. Aled Thomas added the extras and just eight minutes later Scarlets crossed the line again.

In a contender for try of the season, prop John crashed over the line only for Thomas to spurn the conversion chance.

The Dragons reduced arrears with a 24th-minute penalty expertly threaded by Jason Tovey, who hit the upright with another penalty attempt six minutes later as the visitors tried to wrestle back the momentum.

However, the full-back was at the heart of Dragons’ creativity and made amends with a try of his own four minutes before the interval, though he missed the conversion.

Scarlets full-back Thomas put a full score between the sides with a 48th-minute penalty but the game decisively turned in the 57th minute.

Newport Gwent Dragons winger Adam Hughes saw yellow and within a minute Scarlets made their numerical advantage count as John scored his second.

Thomas missed the extras but the Dragons were still down to 14 when Davies scored his second, Tovey again struggling to convert in difficult conditions.

History was made in the 67th minute when 18-year old Jacob Cowley was introduced for Scarlets winger Harry Robinson, joining father Regan King, 35, on the pitch – the first father and son pairing ever to play together for the Scarlets and the first in regional rugby.

To their credit the Dragons never dropped their work rate and replacement scrum-half Sarel Pretorius reduced the arrears with a try that Tovey converted.

But the Scarlets still enjoyed a comfortable ten-point lead – Tovey missed a late penalty – and their maximum points return was never really in doubt.
