Leinster and Munster are both through to the semi-finals of the Champions Cup after they collected dramatic wins over fellow Guinness PRO14 teams Ulster and Edinburgh respectively.

Ross Byrne landed a stunning late penalty to see his Leinster side safely through and send Ulster packing while Keith Earls was the hero for Munster as they came from behind.

Meanwhile Glasgow Warriors signed off with a heavy defeat to Saracens but didn’t go down without a fight.

Byrne holds his nerve in spectacular win over Ulster

A late penalty from Ross Byrne was the difference as Leinster ran out 21-18 winners in a thrilling game against Ulster.

The heavyweight battle began with a try from Kieran Treadwell after his Ulster side charged down a drop kick before Ross Byrne reduced the deficit with a score of his own.

Ulster then had a try chalked off after Jacob Stockdale failed to dot down cleanly – he was made to rue his missed chance when Adam Byrne used his speed to finish in the corner minutes later.

Luke Marshall then drove over powerfully following a sweeping move to draw the visitors level but Ross Byrne kept his composure with ten minutes to go.

Earls puts on a show in early kick off

A Keith Earls-inspired Munster came from behind in dramatic style to claim the first Champions Cup semi-final spot with victory over Edinburgh Rugby.

With ten minutes left to play, Munster found themselves trailing but a second try of the game from Earls turned the game on its head as Munster ran out 13-17 winners.

Munster took the lead after Earls capitalised on loose hands at the back of a scrum to dive over and Joey Carbery made it maximum points.

But their lead did not last for long as Chris Dean hit a perfect line to power through the Munster defenders to get to the line. And Jaco van der Walt added the extras from the tee to tie the scores.

A Van der Walt penalty gave Edinburgh a slender lead at half time before replacement Tyler Bleyendaal levelled the scores just after the break only for the Edinburgh fly-half to poke his team’s nose ahead once more.

But the stage was set for late drama and Earls obliged as he finished expertly in the corner for Bleyendaal to nudge Munster to safety with the extras and put the game beyond Edinburgh.

Warriors battle but can’t stay on

Glasgow Warriors’ Champions Cup bid came to an end at the quarter-final stage as they were beaten 56-27 by Saracens at Allianz Park.

The afternoon had begun in perfect fashion for Dave Rennie’s side, the returning Ali Price capping a flowing move to break the deadlock just 69 seconds in.

But Saracens are a formidable force both domestically and in Europe, and Liam Williams, David Strettle and captain Brad Barritt hit back with tries before the break to hand the hosts a 22-13 half-time lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern, and Williams and Strettle both bagged second-half doubles before the impressive Jamie George capped a strong individual performance with a try just after the hour mark.

Substitute George Horne and No. 8 Matt Fagerson restored some pride either side of Nick Tompkins’ score, but it was to be Saracens’ day and they will now play another Guinness PRO14 side in Munster for a place in the final.
