Tom Prydie won the battle of the fledgling kickers with an 18-point haul to help Newport Gwent Dragons maintain their excellent record over Edinburgh in the RaboDirect PRO12 with a 32-12 victory.

The 20-year-old fired over six penalties on a still Rodney Parade evening on Friday to defy Dragons’ early season form which had garnered just one win.

In the opposition ranks Harry Leonard, who replaced Greig Laidlaw at fly-half for the Scottish side, missed three out of his four kicks but in truth the powerful hosts were too good.

The Dragons have not lost to Edinburgh since April 2011, while the Gunners haven’t won in Newport since 2006 and within the first minute a try-saving tackle prevented the Welsh outfit making the perfect start.

Things soon turned sour when flanker Dan Lydiate was forced off with what proved to be a broken ankle after just two minutes.

With the hosts still licking their wounds good numbers by Edinburgh resulted in a scrum five metres out – a neat pass from Netani Talei to Ross Rennie coming to fruition when Tom Brown forced his way over on 11 minutes. Leonard added the extras for the Scottish side.

Just a minute later though the Dragons got their first points on the board, Prydie sailing over his first penalty.

It was the same story on 20 minutes as the Welsh wing whistled over his second kick of the evening to reduce the arrears to one point.

The 20-year-old was looking in imperious form with the boot, and proved as much on 26 minutes when he fired over another penalty from the halfway line.

His kicking counterpart Leonard was having less luck. The youngster narrowly missed a penalty on the half hour before coming up short with another five minutes later.

Prydie again showed him how to do it, Sean Cox’s clash with Jevon Groves resulting in the penalty and he joined Dragons hooker Steve Jones in the sin-bin.

Cox’s omission was to prove costly as on the stroke of half-time the Dragons extended their lead when Phil Price sprinted over the line.

The prop collected the ball from a line-out on the Edinburgh 22 but despite Prydie’s first miss of the evening the hosts went in 17-7 up at the break.

The miss did little to deter Prydie though, who slotted his first kick of the second period over within two minutes of the restart.

Edinburgh looked to respond through Nick De Luca who made two good breaks, but their inability to capitalise proved costly.

The Dragons went up the other end and Steffan Jones’ drop goal extended their advantage to 16 points.

A powerful break by Ben Atiga almost got the visitors back into the contest, but Richie Rees was adjudged to have touched down short of the line.

Not to be deterred, Edinburgh did get themselves back into the game through Tim Visser on the hour, but the Scottish wing’s try wasn’t converted by Leonard.

The Dragons replied immediately as Jones kicked his second drop goal of the evening before Prydie added three more points.

Jones then made it a hat-trick of drop goals and saw Darren Edwards’ troops collect their second win of the RaboDirect PRO12 campaign.
