Scarlets recorded their second draw of the GUINNESS PRO12 season after letting slip a seven point advantage to end the game 20-20 against Edinburgh.

The tense encounter at Murrayfield saw Scarlets open the scoring in less than a minute, while Edinburgh’s Tom Heathcote’s penalty attempt after 80 minutes fell agonisingly short and both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Edinburgh ran out searching for their second win in nine PRO12 matches, and this season have fallen to Connacht and Ospreys following their opening-day win against Munster.

Head coach Alan Solomons fielded eight changes following last week’s 62-13 defeat to Ospreys and the match saw the return of captain Ross Ford.

Scarlets entered the fixture eager to maintain the momentum after their 43-0 win against Benetton Treviso the week before.

And the Welsh outfit showed their intent almost instantly and were on the board after just 44 seconds when outside centre Gareth Owen deftly punched a kick through Edinburgh’s defensive line. Harry Robinson managed to get a hand to the ball in a one-on-one with Heathcote. Fly half Rhys Priestland added the extras.

Edinburgh got on to the scoreboard on the ten minute mark when Scarlets were penalised at the scrum and Heathcote slotted through the uprights.

Priestland kept the score in Scarlets favour with a converted a penalty to make it 10-3.

After a first quarter of one-way traffic from Scarlets, the visitors were able to break through the stretched Edinburgh defence.

A quick tap penalty by scrum half Aled Davies saw him break past several defenders and his offload found Liam Williams, who crashed over to make it 15-3 and Priestland added the conversion.

But Edinburgh hit back in fine style. After attacking deep in the Scarlets half, the ball was shipped out wide on the five metre line where a looping pass found Tim Visser who powered over the line. Heathcote sealed the conversion.

Priestland was unable to convert a penalty minutes later and the half wrapped up 17-10.

Scarlets were first to score after the break when Edinburgh’s John Andress was sent to the sin bin and Priestland made no mistake to add three points.

Minutes later Scarlets were penalised for being offside and Heathcote slotted home the 51m penalty to keep the Scottish side within a score of the visitors.

In the final ten minutes, Edinburgh capitalised on the extra man after John Barclay was sent to the sin bin.

The hosts kicked for a five metre line out. After one attacking drive at the line, the ball was popped up to replacement Phil Burleigh who burst through the defensive line at pace. Heathcote’s conversion drew the sides level at 20-20.

After the 80 minutes had passed Edinburgh were given a chance to snatch victory after Scarlets were penalised on the half way line. Heathcote opted for the kick, but his effort fell short of the bar.
