What a weekend of Guinness PRO14 rugby that was. The best round of the lot so far? Very possibly so.

From Leinster’s resounding statement of intent on Friday night to Dan Jones’s winner in the red to close out Saturday via a very first Kings away win – Round 6 was special – here’s all the reaction.

Kings Create History

There was unbridled joy for the Isuzu Southern Kings on Saturday as they made history by registering their first away win in the competition and their first win of the season, against Ospreys in Swansea.

The Kings held on for a narrow 16-14 victory in atrocious weather at the Liberty Stadium to record a morale boosting win, in part thanks to a 13-0 lead at the break created by an amazing try rounded off by Erich Cronje.

“It is hard to put this into words,” said Kings coach Robbi Kempson. “It was an unbelievable effort from my boys. We got a bit of the rub of the green here and there, but the defensive effort and the way they dug in when Ospreys were throwing everything at them was just outstanding. I can’t fault a single player.

“We will enjoy this win, as winning overseas has been a long time in coming.

“What was most encouraging about this performance was that it was achieved by a very young team with a few old guys mixed in.”

Conway Stunner

Late on Saturday afternoon Munster and Ulster played out a cracker of an Interpro at Thomond Park, with the home side prevailing 22-16 on the night.

An evenly-contested match saw John Cooney kick Ulster ahead midway through the second half, until wing Andrew Conway intervened with a pearler of a winner.

“He’s a player for the big moments,” said Munster coach Johann van Graan.

“I thought he had an excellent World Cup and he’s taken that form into Munster. I thought his defence was very good, I thought his high ball was very good and it was a special try.

“You want world class players in your team and he’s certainly one of those.”

Jones the Iceman

Speaking of glorious winners, Scarlets fly-half Dan Jones might well have been bowling about West Wales with an extra swagger in his step last night, after holding his nerve to kick his side to a 20-17 victory over Benetton.

A crazy game at Parc y Scarlets ended with the hosts battering away at the Benetton line for most of the second half, incredible defence from the Italian side but then Jones stepping up at 80 + 1 to edge it after Tommaso Allan had equalised.

After the match, Scarlets head coach Brad Mooar said: “Dan has ice running through his veins, that’s how it looks to us, although he did tell us his heart was pumping. He works hard, he is a great Scarlets man.

“After they kicked a penalty to tie it up, I thought the guys showed fantastic character to say ‘well how can we win this?’ They got the ball back from the kick-off and they’ve given us an opportunity to win.”

Leinster’s Power Pack

We’ll leave the last word though to Leinster coach Leo Cullen, whose side sit proudly atop Conference A with six from six and who paid tribute to forward grunt in the 42-11 victory away at Connacht.

“There were lots of positives in the game, for sure,” Cullen told RTÉ Sport.

“In the first half especially, we were very strong in around the contact area, which gave us a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball.

“The forwards laid a good platform and it was good to see the front row get in for four tries between the twos and the threes.”
