A rip-roaring, leg-pumping Round 3 is done and dusted with Toyota Cheetahs, Leinster and Scarlets standing proudly with three wins from three.

PIENAAR PUMPED

The Free Staters secured their third successive victory in the Championship as they defeated Munster 40-16 in a breathless display.

Scrum-half Ruan Pienaar, a key figure in the team this season with his vast experience, believes the side is building something special as they continue to play with confidence.

“This win was really important for us to build momentum before we head overseas,” said Pienaar. “It was a great test for us, especially with some of the situations we will face on tour.

“It is about building a winning culture, and we know it will be a massive challenge. This team has learned a lot, and it is about kicking on.”

KINGS YOUTH HOLD FIRM

Staying in South Africa but moving to Port Elizabeth and a clinical performance by Ulster, who prevailed 42-17 over the Isuzu Southern Kings.

Kings coach Robbie Kempson though was rightly pleased with a second-half performance that stemmed the flow, with the score already at 35-10 at half-time.

“The substitutions made a difference, although from half-time we were basically an under-23 side on the field.

“There was a lot more energy and effort, and I have to give it to the side that played in the second half. We showed what we can do if we are given the opportunity, and the players went out there and produced the goods.”

RDS COMFORTS FOR BENT

A second-half try-rush helped Leinster seal a 40-14 victory over a spirited Edinburgh at the RDS, a ground where prop Michael Bent had not previously scored: “It was good energy from the boys. It’s good to finish the first little block with three wins from three, and great to get the try after a long period of nothing!”

Meanwhile head coach Leo Cullen praised the support at the Dublin stadium: “It means a lot to the players to play in front of the home support. The crowd were fantastic tonight.”

TOUGH-TALKING RYAN

New Dragons boss Dean Ryan admitted his side needs to improve after succumbing to a 38-14 defeat to a powerful Connacht side at Rodney Parade.

“We can’t run away from it. We have certain issues in the physical contest and come up against sides that put that very directly at us,” he said.

“We have never been under any illusions about the challenge, Friday was just an example of how we look to start to get better.

“We need to roll up our sleeves and start engaging with those aspects of the game.”

WARRIOR SPIRIT

Finalists last year and often fast starters, Glasgow Warriors struggled in defeats in Round 1 and Round 2 but head coach Dave Rennie was delighted his side found their composure to edge past Cardiff Blues 17-13 at Scotstoun.

“We felt that we could maul them well tonight – obviously we kicked a penalty to the corner early on and scored from it, and we decided to kick to the corner rather than the posts when they had a man in the bin.

“Even the last one tonight, when the penalty was so wide there was no guarantee of the points. Again we backed ourselves in the maul, but unfortunately turned the ball over.

“I thought we showed a good amount of composure when it mattered tonight though.”

PURPLE PATCH FOR SCARLETS

“It is great to see the boys playing with a smile on their face,” – that was the verdict of head coach Brad Mooar after watching his Scarlets side put Zebre to the sword 54-10 in West Wales.

Scarlets ran in eight tries in all, four in each half, to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and hoist them to the top of Conference B after three rounds.

“They are a group who are willing to express themselves, they are also keeping their feet on the ground and looking to improve all the time, which is great. I am thrilled for them.

“We are three wins from three, it has been a good start.”
