Guinness PRO14 sides entered the final weekend of European games with a raft of varying permutations.

Leinster were the only side guaranteed a spot in the knockout stages and Dragons were the only side certain to bow out in the pool stages, setting up a dramatic weekend for the other 10 teams.

And it turned out to be alright on the night for the Irish teams, with Leinster, Munster and Ulster all booking a place in the knockout phases of the Champions Cup, with Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors joining them while Cardiff Blues and Scarlets missed out.

Elsewhere, in the Challenge Cup, Connacht Rugby were the only Guinness PRO14 team to escape the pool stages and head into the next round, with Dragons, Zebre, Benetton and Ospreys all eliminated.

CHAMPIONS CUP ACTION

IRISH TEAMS ON SONG

All three Irish Guinness PRO14 teams made it out of the pool stages to book a place in the knockout round, with Leinster set to face Ulster in the quarter-final while Munster also topped their pool.

Leinster still had some work to do to ensure they won their pool but put together a bonus-point victory over Wasps.

The reigning champions did not allow their English opponents to put a point past them in the first half and were in complete control by the time Sean Cronin scored his second try of the game to put himself level with Jacob Stockdale as the top try-scorer of the pool stages with six.

Not bad for a front-rower.

Meanwhile, Stockdale’s Ulster overcame Leicester by a solitary point and it was replacement scrum-half John Cooney, who proved pivotal, helping to turn the game on its head.

And Munster made it a 12th consecutive European win at home thanks to three Joey Carberry penalties as Exeter Chiefs scored the only try of a narrow 9-7 game.

SCOTS GO HAND IN HAND

Edinburgh Rugby did the whole of Scotland a favour when they produced a stunning victory over Montpellier that also meant Glasgow Warriors went through from their group.

That was Edinburgh seventh win on the trot and they had Darcy Graham to thank for it as he crossed in the corner to send almost 12,00 Edinburgh fans wild.

Glasgow Warriors were in need of a favour to take one of the three available runners-up spots and they clinched a berth – despite losing to Saracens at Allianz Park.

WELSH WOES

For both Scarlets and Cardiff Blues, the European adventure was over before the weekend started.

Just one win and seven points was all Scarlets could muster this time around, still enough to finish above Leicester Tigers in the pool but not enough to challenge for knockout stage qualification.

Still, they played their part in a final round nine-try thriller with Racing 92 and even found themselves with a half-time lead.

Dan Jones knocked over 16 points and Johnny McNicholl went over twice but it wasn’t enough to take anything from the game.

Meanwhile, Cardiff Blues beat Lyon for the second time in the pool stages but previous losses to Saracens and Glasgow Warriors meant qualification was impossible.

CHALLENGE CUP ACTION

Connacht Rugby were not the only Guinness PRO14 team that woke up smiling on Monday morning because for them, the European adventure is not yet over.

Andy Friend’s men were trailing at half-time and in danger of crashing out – but for late tries from Matt Healy and Jack Carty.

Connacht qualified as one of three pool runners-up after finishing behind Sale Sharks and set up a quarter-final against the English side, having lost 34-13 last time out at the AJ Bell Stadium.

For Dragons, Zebre, Benetton and Ospreys, it was early Challenge Cup exits.

Connacht’s win meant that Benetton fell just a point short of qualifying as a runner-up – despite the Italians’ 39-7 win over Grenoble.

Fellow Italians Zebre had a tough task against pool leaders La Rochelle and were vying for a win, going in all square 10-10 at half-time before Ihaia West sent four second-half penalties sailing between the posts to deliver defeat.

And Ospreys were beaten by Pau, who equalled the Welsh side’s overall pool points tally.

However, neither side had enough points to qualify as a runner-up.
