Dougie Fife scored the fastest ever try in Guinness PRO14 history as Edinburgh stretched their winning streak to six in the league with a 29-22 victory at Connacht.

Having caught from the kick-off, Tiernan O’Halloran’s attempted kick forward was blocked by a charging John Hardie, with Fife the fastest to react to the loose ball.

With only ten seconds on the clock, it eclipsed Arwel Thomas’s 12 second try for Swansea at Ebbw Vale in 2001 as the Championship’s fastest try.

It was an explosive start but one Connacht recovered from, leading for much of the game, but replacement Duncan Weir scored 16 points in the final 20 minutes to earn Edinburgh the points.

Edinburgh have now beaten all four Irish provinces this season.

It leaves them in third, five points behind leaders Leinster and 13 points clear of Ulster — who they host in their next Guinness PRO14 game, with a win guaranteeing them a spot in the Finals Series.

Edinburgh’s attention now turns to their European Rugby Challenge Cup quarter-final against Cardiff Blues on Saturday, their third quarter-final in four years.

Arwel Thomas (Swansea at Ebbw Vale, 1 Sep 01) – 12 seconds

Former Wales outside-half Arwel Thomas held the record for 16 years having set it in only the fourth ever Championship round.

Thomas charged down Ebbw Vale outside-half Scott Mitchell’s kick near the try line and capitalised for an easy score within 12 seconds, which he subsequently converted.

Swansea won 26-21 thanks to a 79th-minute try from James Griffiths, with Thomas scoring 21 points.

Nathan Brew (Dragons at Blues, 27 Dec 05) – 18 seconds

Dragons’ Nathan Brew took just 18 seconds to open the scoring at Cardiff Blues.

Inside centre Tristan Davies dropped the kick-off and Dragons’ Gareth Cooper pounced, feeding Brew to open the scoring.

Dragons ultimately lost 41-23 with Cardiff Blues scoring six tries.

Andrew Bishop (Ospreys v Leinster, 4 Sep 05) – 19 seconds

Ospreys started strongly against Leinster thanks to former Wales centre Andrew Bishop.

Leinster wing Rob Kearney took too long for a clearing kick and then-20-year-old Bishop charged him down, intercepting the ball and touching down under the posts.

Kearney made up for his mistake with a second-half try but it wasn’t enough as Ospreys secured a 22-20 win.

Trevor Hogan (Leinster at Connacht, 29 Sep 06) – 21 seconds

Leinster lock Trevor Hogan scored a 21-second try in similar fashion to that of Edinburgh’s Fife on Friday, chasing down an attempted clearance.

Connacht fly-half Mark McHugh’s kick was charged down and Hogan scored one of his three tries for the club.

Three more tries helped Leinster to a 31-16 win in a match that saw three players sin-binned, including McHugh.
