Last weekend Munster ground out an important, if imperfect, 10-3 win over Saracens.

The game was far from a classic, but there have certainly been some masterpieces over the years between these two storied sides.

Overall they have now met a perfect ten times, and Munster edge the head to head 6-4.

And ahead of the re-match this weekend, we take a trip down memory lane and pick out our five favourites.

SARACENS 34-35 MUNSTER

November 1999, Pool stages, Vicarage Road

The first-ever meeting between these two sides in Europe, was also possibly the best.

Sarries, flush with cash in the newly professional era, had signed up the likes of Francois Pienaar and Thierry Lacroix.

Pienaar lined up in the back row with Richard Hill while Munster were new on the scene, not yet European powerhouses with a then unproven half-back combination of Ronan O’Gara and Peter Stringer.

They came to Vicarage Road and were in trouble right from the off.

The boot of Lacroix and a Jeremy Thomson try meant they had built a 21-9 lead at one point.

But back came Munster, Anthony Foley, Killian Keane and Michael Mullins all crossed.

But Roberto Grau and Nick Walshe also crossed the whitewash for Sarries and it looked like they would hold on.

However, there was still time for Jeremy Staunton to get over and O’Gara to drill the extras and Munster could celebrate a famous win.

MUNSTER 31-30 SARACENS

January 2000, Pool stages, Thomond Park

The re-match was feverishly anticipated.

Sarries wanted revenge and Thomond Park had not yet established its fortress-like reputation it now enjoys.

Like the first clash, Sarries raced out into an early lead with Lacroix kicking goals and full-back Mark Mapletoft playing like a man possessed.

The No.15 crossed for a double in the rain, and Sarries again built a healthy 17-8 lead.
