It may seem like we’ve only just recovered from the opener, but the second round of European action is edging ever closer for the Guinness PRO14 sides.

Round one was certainly a weekend to remember for the 12 Guinness PRO14 sides in Europe and we haven’t been short of headlines as the squads gear up to impress once more this weekend.

We start today’s Media Watch in Wales, with Ospreys having announced yesterday that former New Zealand Under-20s fly-half Marty McKenzie has signed on a short-term deal.

With Gareth Anscombe out for the duration of the season after suffering a knee injury on international duty, Ospreys had no option but to strengthen the squad and McKenzie will join the region with immediate effect.

McKenzie, an outside half who can cover at fullback was a key figure in the Chiefs’ resurgence in Super Rugby, helping them to the Super Rugby quarter-final in June 2019.

Staying in Wales, Scarlets were celebrating over winger Johnny McNicholl earning his first call-up to Wales ahead of their match against Barbarians later this month.

The call-up should give McNicholl plenty of confidence heading into this weekend’s trip to Toulon, not that he doesn’t know how to impress on French soil already.

Heading to Ireland, we arrive at Ulster who confirmed Billy Burns has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Kingspan Stadium until at least 2022

The announcement comes as positive news ahead of Saturday’s clash against French giants Clermont, which will be Ulster’s 150^th game in the Champions Cup.

In Leinster, Leo Cullen’s side may be boosted ahead of Saturday’s clash against Lyon by the return of Robbie Henshaw, who is eager to return to action after a series of injury-hit seasons.

The centre told the Irish Times that he is eager to ‘get back on the pitch and get on with it’ and that the ideal Christmas present would be an ‘injury-free run’.

Over in Scotland, Edinburgh attack coach Duncan Hodge is in no doubt as to the threat of Bordeaux in this weekend’s Challenge Cup tie.

The Scots had no problem defeating Agen 31-10 at Stade Armandie last Friday, but with Bordeaux currently sitting second in the Top 14 table, Hodge knows this weekend’s opponents pose a much greater threat.
