The Guinness PRO14 season is now in full flow, and with the time for acclimatisation well and truly over, all 14 teams will be hungry for success with Round 5 almost upon us.

Three tantalising fixtures on Friday evening get the weekend underway, before four more mouth-watering matches on Saturday round off with a crunching clash in Cardiff.

With both Conferences steadily taking shape, unbeaten records to maintain and elusive wins at stake, there is all to play for in what is sure to be another thrilling week of Guinness PRO14 action.

FRIDAY

GLASGOW WARRIORS V ISUZU SOUTHERN KINGS

Arguably one of the weekend’s most compelling fixtures, the Isuzu Southern Kings will head to the home of last season’s beaten finalists confident they can turn over the so-far stuttering Warriors in their own back yard.

The South African side are so-far winless in the fresh campaign but have been largely competitive in all of their fixtures and having almost pulled off a miraculous comeback against Benetton in Round 4 – eventually losing out 36-30 – it appears a maiden win is not far from their clutches.

They will be buoyed by the fact they emerged 38-28 winners in the sides’ last meeting, while Glasgow have struggled to find their form so far this season with just one win from four.

Player to look out for: Kyle Steyn – Glasgow Warriors

If the Warriors are going to get back to their best, one of last season’s top performers is likely to be one of their key weapons whether at centre or on the wing.

Fast fact: Southern Kings have won two of their last three fixtures against Scottish opponents.

ULSTER RUGBY V ZEBRE RUGBY CLUB

A tale of two sides with contrasting fortunes so far this season, Ulster will be confident of extending their winning run to three games since being heavily overturned by the Toyota Cheetahs in early October.

Having triumphed 23-14 over Cardiff Blues in Round 4, Dan McFarland’s men have consolidated their place in the Conference A table, but what looks like a simple task on paper might spur a few more questions than expected.

While still chasing their first win of the campaign, Zebre limited defending champions Leinster to just a 3-0 win last time out, and they will be determined to build on such a resilient defensive display by getting their first win on the board.

Player to look out for: John Cooney – Ulster Rugby

The Belfast-based side will be hoping their talisman can continue his prolific form, as he sits top of the league charts for points scored with an impressive 48.

Fast fact: Zebre are without a win in the Guinness PRO14 for 12 months since beating Edinburgh in Parma in Round 7 last season.

LEINSTER RUGBY V DRAGONS

Despite the close proximity of their Round 4 victory over winless Zebre, defending champions Leinster have started the season as they left off and are the only side still unbeaten in ²⁰¹⁹⁄₂₀.

Leo Cullen’s men sit just one point shy of a perfect tally having dropped a bonus point against the Italians, but will face a different test in Round 5 as they welcome a revitalised Dragons side looking to work their way up the Conference A table.

The Welsh side toppled last season’s runners-up Glasgow Warriors 18-5 in Round 4 and look a threat under Dean Ryan, but having failed to string two successive away triumphs together since 2012, they know they will have to be at their best to get anything from this game.

Player to look out for: Ollie Griffiths – Dragons

Having struggled with injuries, the back-rower looks back at his best and an outstanding display against the Warriors last time out will need to be replicated if his team are to cause a shock in Dublin.

Fast fact: The Leinstermen have lost just once at the RDS Arena in any competition since April 2018 – 39-24 to Glasgow Warriors in Round 20 of last season’s Championship.

SATURDAY

SCARLETS V TOYOTA CHEETAHS

In what seems to be a tough match to call, both sides will be determined to get over their first losses of the campaign they suffered in Round 4 and firmly establish themselves as title contenders with a return to winning ways.

The Cheetahs looked to be blowing the Championship away with three stunning wins in their first three matches, but narrowly lost out 24-22 to Connacht last time out, and historically struggle away from home.
