Glasgow Warriors and Munster have produced some memorable battles over the past two seasons at the top of Conference A, and while they are no longer conference rivals, the potential for entertainment when they meet remains as undimmed as ever.

For Glasgow fans, games against Munster will always have a special place in their hearts, given that it was against the men from Limerick that they captured their maiden Guinness PRO12 title.

Last year in the Guinness PRO14, they finished just ahead of their Irish counterparts at the top of Conference A, going onto reach the final at Celtic Park.

However, when the teams met at Thomond Park in October, it was Munster who had the final say in one of the matches of the season as Rory Scannell slotted a last-gasp penalty in a 25-24 victory.

Everything had started well for Munster, who opened the scoring with a try from close range from prop James Cronin.

They were looking to make it two when Albie Mathewson took a quick tap from a scrum free-kick, going down the blindside before kicking deep into the Glasgow 22.

Showing the enterprise that we have come to love from Dave Rennie’s team, George Horne chased back and gathered and rather than turning to the boot, decided to keep the ball alive.

A phase later, and still in the Glasgow 22, a beautiful floated pass from Matt Fagerson put Rory Hughes away. He found Peter Horne on his shoulder, who then served his younger brother inside him to race away for one of the tries of the season.

Horne showed his remarkable support skills and ability to read play again before half-time, this time after Nick Grigg had burst through on the left.

Glasgow looked unstoppable early in the second half when they crossed twice after good work from their forwards, first when Fagerson powered over off a scrum, then when Peter Horne collected from his brother’s clever chip.

That bonus-point try put Glasgow 24-10 up on the hour, but with 15 minutes to go, Munster hit back thanks to a fine finish in the corner from Alex Wootton.

Mathewson then sniped over from close range to set up a grandstand finish before Munster earned a penalty 45 metres out on the angle with the clock hitting the red.

Centre Scannell held his nerve with a monster kick and Thomond Park erupted.

The next meeting between the two teams will again be in Limerick, next April. If last season’s game was anything to go by, we could be in for a thriller.
