Ulster suffered their first blow moments later when No.8 Jean Deysel was forced off with an injury before Glasgow pounced with their first score through a Finn Russell penalty.

Warriors then drew level when Fraser Brown barged through weak tackles by Ross Kane and Timoney and exploited a two-on-one before offloading to Callum Gibbins to score.

With the momentum on their side, Glasgow soon went in search of a second try – only for Charles Piutau to tackle Tommy Seymour into touch as the ex-Ulster winger targeted the whitewash.

The visitors came close to going in front for the first time again on 26 minutes. In fact, Warriors thought they had scored when Dunbar ran over Johnny McPhillips and stretched for the line.

But the TMO ruled he was millimetres short and Ulster responded with two more penalties from the boot of Cooney, giving the home side a six-point advantage at the break.

That ultimately proved to be Cooney’s last contribution to the game, though, as he was replaced by Paul Marshall at the interval due to a head injury assessment at half-time.

And the change initially appeared to disrupt Ulster after the restart, with Gibbins capitalising from a solid lineout maul that rumbled over the whitewash to bring Warriors within a point.

Russell’s attempted conversion came back off the post and having come close to falling beihnd, Ulster regained their composure and took the game by the scruff of the neck.

First Jacob Stockdale came in off his wing to attack the gain line before offloading to Stuart McCloskey, whose smart pass allowed Timoney to dive over.

Another McCloskey break then resulted in a sustained period of pressure in the Warriors half, which provided the platform for Sean Reidy to force his way through and dot down.

With the result no longer in doubt, Ulster tracked down the all-important bonus-point score, introducing Tommy Bowe to inject a late burst of energy into their attack.

And the Irish international had the desired impact as his thunderous tackle paved the way for Ulster’s fourth try, with Bowe making the final pass for Timoney to complete his brace.
