Zebre are taking their Round 12 clash with Munster on tour to Milan as part of a three-day rugby event that also features the Italian women’s national side.

In February 2020, Zebre host the Irish province at Stadio Giovanni Mari in Legnano, a 5,000-seat facility just outside of Milan.

Following that maiden Guinness PRO14 clash in Milan the “Milano Rugby Week” will see the Azzurre take on Scotland in the Women’s Six Nations as Andrea Di Giandomenico’s side go from strength to strength and aim to improve on their second-place finish in 2019.

As we’ve seen in the Championship in years gone by, Zebre have moved games around Italy and enjoyed success in doing so, with a win over Dragons in 2018 and two end-to-end defeats to Leinster also recorded, which we’ve taken a trip down memory lane for here.

Zebre CEO Andrea Dalledonne commented: “Despite the many difficulties of organising a match in a stadium away from Parma, it allows us to compete in the most important Italian city and to show that rugby can return to being a sport that gets the audience and attention that it had in the past, and that it must return to.”

April 2013 – Stadio del Tricolore, Reggio Emilia

Zebre 22-41 Leinster

Going back in time six years and it seems some things never change, with Johnny Sexton recording 16 points in a Leinster win.

This was the first occasion Zebre took a match on the road and the crowd were rewarded with an entertaining affair, Leinster outscoring their hosts five tries to three.

The game saw the scores level at 17-17 at half-time, Tom Denton and Fergus McFadden on the scoresheet for Leinster but Sinoti Sinoti and Daniel Halangahu replying for Zebre.

Carlo Festuccia bagged Zebre’s third after the break but Fionn Carr, Dominic Ryan and Leinster legend Isa Nacewa wrapped things up for the visitors.

April 2018 – Stadio Tommaso Fattori, L’Aquila

Zebre 34-32 Dragons

It would be five more years until Zebre took another game on the road but the Italians were delighted with the results when they did, downing Dragons in a lung-busting occasion in April 2018.

Carlo Canna scored a late try to break Dragons hearts as Zebre came from behind to win a pulsating contest at Stadio Fattori L’Aquila.

Jared Rosser scored a hat-trick as the Dragons went in search of a first Guinness PRO14 away win since 2015, with the winger grabbing two in a superb first-half display.

He then completed his hat-trick before half-time and Charlie Davies confirmed the bonus point.

However, Zebre came storming back with three quick-fire tries closing the gap to just two points – Tomasso Castello, Tommaso D’Apice and Johan Meyer all getting on the scoresheet.

Canna then bundled his way over to put the Italians on top and they survived both a disallowed Dragons try and a long-range Arwel Robson penalty attempt to cling on for a memorable victory.

February 2019 – Stadio Zaffanella, Viadana

Zebre 24-40 Leinster

Third time on the road and another good match for the travelling support, with Leinster needing two tries in the last five minutes to overcome a ferocious fightback from Michael Bradley’s men.

When the Guinness PRO14 champions led 21-0 after 22 minutes they looked on course for the simplest of victories.

But the Italian side fought back with three tries before half-time (Francois Brummer, Jamie Elliott, Gabriele di Giulio), adding another in the second half to make it a one-score game heading into the final ten minutes.

That was when Conor O’Brien popped up on the left, collecting the ball from Noel Reid to dot down in the corner before Max Deegan completed his double with the final play.
